"I've been here for nearly six years now.” Jessica Rose charts the timeline of her ownership of this huge artist’s loft house in this arty quarter of Forest Hill SE23. "I've lived in London all my life; before moving here, I lived in Clapham.

“I knew this space was perfect for me the moment I stepped foot inside. Conventional layouts and four walls were never my thing. Havelock Walk houses are just as unique and individual outside as well as in – it's a very cool street. We have open days along the street twice a year and the number of visitors we attract is huge, and no wonder.”

Being a live/work space, the house has offered Jessica the chance to start and grow a hugely successful jewellery design business and recently, her jewellery making tutorials have become a YouTube sensation.

The unconventional layout of the house offers endless possibilities: live, work, singles and couples, there’s a space for everyone and everything and lots of it, with just under 1,900 square feet spread over three floors.

In total there are three bedrooms and two receptions, but Jessica has chosen to use the upper reception as a very decadent master bedroom suite, complete with an open bathroom and its copper roll top bath sitting casually by the loading doors. Not surprisingly, it’s her favourite part of the house. 

The lower reception room is a completely open plan space. The refurbishment works carried out many years ago took the floor level down a few feet, allowing the large mezzanine floor to be added, and it’s here that her home office sits.

“I will miss is the peace and quiet”, says Jessica.

It’s true; the house is at the very end of the street, and you’d never guess that just a few yards away there’s a trendy cafe culture lifestyle to enjoy, as well as a large Sainsbury’s for groceries and a varied selection of destination pubs. The Devonshire Arms is a particular favourite, especially for the food. Coffee aficionados make a beeline for St David’s Coffee House and The Signal, a great pub that also hosts live events. If you head further afield, Jessica favours The Orchard in Brockley, a gastropub serving up delicious seasonal menus.

You also have the advantage of Forest Hill Station on your doorstep. There's a combination of national rail services direct to London Bridge or, with a change, Cannon Street, Charing Cross and Victoria. There’s also the London Overground with direct services to the City fringe and North West London with a change at Canada Water for the Jubilee Line. 

So what next, Jessica?

“My business is growing and I need more space, so for the next few years I’m heading for a life on the coast, but when all’s said and done, London is my home and one day I will be back.”
