Looking for May Day inspiration to cure your Bank Holiday boredom? Instead of your usual weekend routine (IKEA will still be there next week!), try these May Day-only celebrations for a unique and memorable experience.

Jack in The Green – Hastings

May Day inspiration - Jack in the Green, Hastings

You don’t need to fly to Mars to see green men roaming freely – simply get yourself down to Hastings for Jack In The Green and sample four days of frolics and mayhem.

This traditional folk festival from the 17th century was revived in the 1980s and is all about releasing the spirit of summer. And alongside the main parade of forest people, morris dancers and a military band, you’ll find life folk music, ceilidhs, music sessions and performers from all over the country.

Canalway Cavalcade – London

London’s canals are well known for their narrow boat communities and tow paths, but not so much for carnivals. Yet every year, Canalway Cavalcade turns the usually sedate section of the Regents Canal at Little Venice into a buzzing celebration of life of the water.

Running over the entire weekend, the three days of entertainment and spectacles include boating activities, live music, real ales, kid’s stuff and the centrepiece illuminated procession. All aboard!

CSP in the Park – Canterbury

May Day inspiration - CSP in the Park, Canterbury

Kent’s free-to-enter music and arts festival in the cathedral city of Canterbury is still going strong since its first May Day weekend in 2016. Taking place in Dane John Gardens, CSP (City Sound Project) runs for two days and is Canterbury’s biggest music event.

Across multiple stages you can expect bands, DJs, artists and street food, so whether it’s getting your groove on or lounging around with a pint and chips, the festival has you covered. And if you’ve still got fuel in the tank, there are after parties on both nights. Tune!
